FAQs

Who are Tutorwiz?

Tutorwiz is the UK’s first online tutorial company with actual live tutor support from our own in-house team of tutors for children aged between 6-16 studying the UK curriculum.

“We help children who are not quite reaching their potential or are just doing okay and we help the high achievers to do even better.”

We have helped over 90,000 children improve their grades and boost their self-confidence.

When can my child start with the Tutorwiz programmes?

Once you have spoken with one of our education consultants we can have the lessons up and running in as little as 48 hours. To understand your child’s specific needs please call 0800 181 4221 or book a quick chat with one of our education consultants on this link.

The students range from age 6 to 16. The great thing about Tutorwiz is that whatever ability the child is, they will benefit from enrolling into one of the Tutorwiz programmes. We put the weekly lessons plan together for the student’s current school year. As soon as the student starts to work on these plans, if it becomes apparent that they are either too hard or too easy, the programme and tutors will adjust the student’s levels accordingly. The last thing we want to do at Tutorwiz is to make the student feel despondent if the weekly lesson plans and exams are too tough.

How much is it to enrol with Tutorwiz?

Depending on the student’s school year, Tutorwiz starts from as little as £21 per week for maths and English. This fee includes an assessment, the rewards programme, reports and your Tutor backup support. Click here to book an appointment with an Educational Consultant and get your first 2 weeks free. The programme follows the UK curriculum and the school year.

How does Tutorwiz differ from tuition or classroom learning?

Tutorwiz is a unique, home study, e-learning experience that utilises assessment-based, personalised weekly lesson plans, guided and supported by our tutor team. The weekly lesson plans give children guided tutorials, worked examples and instant feedback to increase understanding and aid better retention. Tutorwiz is designed to fit around other after school extracurricular activities.

It helps students to understand the Maths and English concepts that they are ready to learn, in turn helping with confidence in the classroom and everyday life. The programme does not intend to take away classroom teaching but supports and fills in gaps that have appeared in the student’s educational journey. Using Tutorwiz helps prevent the anxiety of having tutors come to the house, or all the hassle and inconvenience of taking the student to an after-school tutoring centre.

How are Tutorwiz students taught?

Tutorwiz is an online computer programme that allows the student to work through weekly lesson plans, take tests and have fun doing this. The student can call or email the Tutorwiz Tutor Centre to ask our tutors for help with any issues that the student is stuck on. It is also a Parent helpline, so the parent can ask the tutor how the child is doing.

Tutorwiz is assessment based, with personalised weekly lesson plans to complete online at home. Based on short 20-minute lessons and with back up tutor support. These can be accessed by a computer or tablet. To find out how these lessons can help you child please book and quick chat with one of our education consultants on this link.

What are the programmes; Maths and Englishwiz?

Maths and Englishwiz are central to the Tutorwiz tutoring solution. The programmes include over 35,000 interactive questions in Maths and English, with over 200 tests/exams, over 1,500 lesson plans and over 65 educational and skills building games and tests (including assessments for all students). It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy. Using Maths and Englishwiz, students are able to learn much faster. In fact, teachers have reported that concepts that may take up to two weeks to learn in the classroom can be learnt in just 20 minutes on the programme due to its interactive nature.

When you enrol in the Maths programme, the student completes our Maths Doctor Assessment. This is a very clever assessment that allows us to produce a personal “Weekly Lesson Plan”, which comes out every Monday and is based on your child’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing your children to truly reach their potential!

We recommend that each student does 1 ½ hours per 7-day week. We also recommend that the student does not do it all in one go but breaks it down into chunks of about 15-20 minutes at a time. Some students do complete the 1 ½ hour work session before their seven days are up,  if they want to, they can accelerate into what we call “extensions”, which is going on to do work that even their school class year have not started yet, allowing the student to be ahead of their class.

Maths and Englishwiz are central to the Tutorwiz tutoring solution. The programmes include over 35,000 interactive questions in Maths and English, 200 tests/exams, 1,500 lesson plans and over 65 educational and skills building games. The lessons cover all the necessary skills in literacy, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy.

Using Maths and Englishwiz, students can learn much faster.

Each new student completes the Maths Doctor Assessment. This innovative tool allows us to produce a personalised “Weekly Lesson Plan”, based on your child’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling your children to learn what they are ready to learn right now.

We recommend that each student completes 1 ½ hours per 7-day week. This equates to 4 x 15-20 minutes sessions, each with their own tutorial on how to complete the plan followed by relevant questions to test understanding. These short, interactive lesson aid better retention. In our experience, when students cram the entire week in to one session it has a negative effect on retention.

Every student and parent will receive an activity report showing the student’s progress. Students need to complete the week’s lessons before starting to new topics.

How does Tutorwiz map onto my child’s school’s curriculum and exams?

Tutorwiz has digitalised the UK school’s curriculum for Maths and English, so what the student sees and works on will be familiar to them as if they were in the classroom. We encompass tutoring for SAT’s, scholarships and entrance exams, 11+ and the beginning of GCSEs. The sooner the student starts the better equipped they will be in the classroom and feel confident as their educational journey progresses. Tutorwiz can also accommodate those sitting Edexcel, AQA, IGCSE and Baccalaureate exams.

How much time per week does the student have to spend on Tutorwiz?

All we ask is that your child spends just 20 minutes learning with us 4 times per week. This will work well with your child’s attention span and vitally, help them retain the information. To see how Tutorwiz can help your child please call 0800 181 4221 or book a quick chat with one of our education consultants on this link.

Some students do complete the 1 ½ hour work session quickly and are keen to do more. If they want to, they can carry on into what we call “extensions”, which are lesson plans that are in advance of the curriculum schedule. This will grant students access to topics before it is taught in their class at school, allowing the student to get ahead of the class.

What are the student incentive plans?

It has been recognised that incentives help children to learn effectively. With all the hard work our students put into using the Tutorwiz programme, we want to give something special back to each child. The plan awards points to all students who complete their weekly lesson plans and tests. The points are banked and converted to high street vouchers. The student can also enter into fun competitions to win more prizes.

Is using Tutorwiz as effective as home tutoring or visiting a study centre?

Using the Tutorwiz programme is as effective as home tutoring but with the major added benefits of convenience, the flexibility of session times, lower cost, and a safe, relaxed environment for the student. To get additional information about using Tutorwiz alongside home-schooling please call 0800 181 4221 or book a quick chat with one of our education consultants on this link.

Are you experienced in working with students with learning difficulties or who are home-schooled?

We currently have many children with a variety of learning needs successfully using the programme to boost their self-confidence, improve their grades and work towards their learning goals. At Tutorwiz, we understand that there is a need for special tuition for children who are “home-schooled”, or who have learning difficulties such as ADHD or Dyslexia. The Tutorwiz programmes help children with these difficulties to improve their children’s education and gain confidence. Have a look at our home-schooling page for more information.

How does Tutorwiz differ from tuition or classroom learning?

Tutorwiz is a unique, tried and test online software programme that allows the student to complete work sessions and the tests in the comfort of their own home or anywhere else they feel comfortable. It allows the student to understand Maths and English, progress with confidence at school and without the peer pressure that sometimes appears in the classroom

The programme does not intend to take away the 1-2-1 element of teaching but supports and enhances the students learning of the subjects. With Tutorwiz, there is no need to have tutors come to the house which, in some cases, can cause anxiety with the student or similarly, there is no need to take the student to a crowded tutoring centre for an hour or two during the week which means being driven to the centre, find a parking place and wait, which takes some hours out of the day.

How much does it cost?

The costs are dependent on the student and the courses; maths and/or English they are enrolled in. The traditional payment plans are monthly, and the contract term is for a year. There are discounts available for siblings joining together or later, as well as discounts for payments made in advance. We do not use Long Term Credit Agreements or do Credit Checks. Your child’s education is as important to us as it is for you and we want to make it as easy and affordable as possible.

At what age can students start using the Tutorwiz programmes study?

The ideal student age is from age 6 (Key stage 1) right the way through to age 16 (Key stage 4). We encompass tutoring for SAT’s, scholarships, 11+ and the beginning of GCSEs. We say the earlier the student starts the better equipment they will be in the classroom and feel confident as their educational journey progresses.

Why do Tutorwiz recommend 1 ½ a week?

What students would benefit from using Tutorwiz?

At Tutorwiz we say whether you are doing OK, need a little help or an overachiever, all students can benefit from enrolling into Tutorwiz. Every student has their own unique requirements, and some may be only loosely aligned to maths and English. It could be a lack of confidence, peer pressure, poor teaching techniques in school, etc.

The student can also be a “home-schooled” student and with Tutorwiz, it would very much support the student’s education.

How will Tutorwiz help my child with their schoolwork?

We recommend that each student does 1 ½ hours per 7-day week. We also recommend that the student does not do all in one go but broken down into chunks for about 15-20 mins at a time. Some students do complete the 1 ½ hour work session before their 7 days are up which, if they want to, they can accelerate, into what we call “extensions”, which is going on to do work which even their school class year have not started yet; allowing the student to be ahead of their class.

The great thing about Tutorwiz and which differs from some other tutorial face to face services and tutor centres, as that we have mapped the programme, exactly, on to the UK school’s curriculum. We want the student to learn how to “learn”. We want to see the student accelerate ahead of the class and grow in confidence. Once working with Tutorwiz, schoolwork will be just that little bit easy and will get easier as they move along on their educational journey

What is the Tutorwiz Maths Doctor Assessment?

Maths Doctor is a very clever assessment which makes a personal Weekly Lesson Plan, based on your child’s strengths and weaknesses. This comes up automatically in Maths Wiz, you don’t have to do a thing. Furthermore, your Weekly Lesson Plans are updated every week, based on results. So, your children can truly reach their true potential!

When do new work sessions arrive?

Every Monday a new weekly lesson plan. It coincides with the weekly student report that is emailed to the parents. The weekly lesson plan is broken down into about seven lessons, each with their own tutorial on how to complete the plan. It will end with an exam. The lesson plans and exams need to be completed within 7 days.

Please explain the Student incentives and rewards plan?

With the student putting in the effort to progress, successfully, through Tutorwiz and ultimately, be successful in school and in life, we, at Tutorwiz, award points for all work completed and exams taken and passed. There is no cost to the parent for this, it is our way to make the student feel rewarded for all the hard work they have put in. There are also competitions that the student can enter, and win points and prizes.

Can my child do more than the required weekly work?

The simple answer is yes. We call it “extensions”. This means the student can, one the weekly lesson plan has been completed, carry on with more work under their own steam. We encourage all students to do as this will allow the student to accelerate pass their classmates and be prepared for what is about to come in the curriculum.

Take a break from monthly fees e.g. family holidays, etc?

Yes, you can. We understand that families need to have time away for holidays, etc. During that time away, the programme can still be done, but some families prefer this not to happen, as it is family time, and therefore we will suspend the course (s) for the duration of the time away and reinstate it when back, this also includes the monthly fees.

How does Tutorwiz map onto my child’s school’s curriculum?

The programme has digitalised the entire UK school’s curriculum for Maths and English. What the student sees and works on will be familiar to them as if they were in the classroom.

The important thing to remember that Tutorwiz is an online programme which means any element of the UK curriculum change, the programme can reflect these changes almost immediately.

What is the significance of the Purple and Gold Owls?

The Tutorwiz Owl logos were specially designed and trademarked for Tutorwiz Ltd. The purple Owl denotes students between the ages of 5-11; Primary School age and the gold Owl denotes students from 11-16; Secondary School age.

Owls have an important role in the animal kingdom but also in ancient Greece, the goddess Athena, who was supposed to be the goddess of wisdom and guardian of the Acropolis. Her symbol was the Owl, so the bird became a symbol of higher wisdom. The owl was a bird of prophecy and wisdom in many ancient cultures.

How long is my child committed to studying with Tutorwiz for when we join?

The child, when enrolled, becomes a student. The minimum course length is a year, but most parents carry it on until such time the child has caught up with the year curriculum or wants to stay to carry on and make use of extensions.

How do the Tutorwiz programmes relate to a child's age?

The great thing about Tutorwiz is that whatever ability the child is at with their Maths and English, they can enrol into Tutorwiz. We naturally will look at the student’s current school year they are in and we will put the weekly lessons plans together for that year. As soon as the student starts to work on these plans and if it becomes apparent that they are either too hard or too easy, the programme and tutors will adjust the student’s levels accordingly. The last thing we want to do at Tutorwiz is to make the student feel despondent if the weekly lesson plans and exams are to touch, which puts them off doing it.

How is a Tutorwiz student taught?

Tutorwiz is an online computer programme that allows the student to work through weekly lessons plans, take test and exams and have fun doing this. It is for the student to learn on their own, but we have the “Tutorwiz Tutor Centre” which the student can call, email, etc. to the live tutors who will walk through any issues that the student is stuck on. It is also a Parent helpdesk so the parent can ask the tutor how the child is doing.

How does it work?

Maths Wiz and English Wiz are central to the Tutorwiz tutoring solution. The programs include over 35,000 interactive questions, skill-building games and tests (including assessments for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy). Using Maths Wiz and English Wiz, students are able to learn much faster (in fact teachers and principals have reported, concepts that may take up to 2 weeks to learn in the classroom can be learned in just 20 minutes on the program) due to its interactive nature.

The unique aspect of the programme is that it is based on technologies designed and honed over several years; It was originally designed and built by a husband and wife team; a maths professor and a computer technologist, for their youngest son who needed to catch up in school. It is composed of over 35,000 interactive questions in maths and English, with over 200 tests/exams, over 1,500 lesson plans and over 65 educational games.

When you enrol with MathsWiz, we will complete, with you, a Maths Dr. report which tells us the gaps which have formed in the past and which are gradually widening. We look to fill these gaps, but not the areas that the student has demonstrated an excellent understanding in. The Maths Dr. report is then sent to the parent to show where we will be focusing on for the student and their year group.

How does the Parent or the Student use the Live Tutor Support centre?

The live Tutorwiz Support Centre has been made available for all enrolled students and their parents. They are them to help with any questions the students or parents may have. They design the tailor-made lesson plans, answer questions the student has sent to them, take calls from parents and students on the weekend. The goal is to make the student successful All our tutors have been cleared by their representative bodies.

How much help am I expected to give my child at home?

I respect the fact that parents want to give the best help to their children with regards schooling and education, but there are times when the student needs to work it out for themselves. The programme has many tutorials and helps systems in place for the student to access and see how any math equation is done or how English compression is composed. We believe that if the student is to be successful, they are left alone to complete the weekly lesson plans and take the tests. We will also know if a parent has helped the student, as well as the technology, is designed for students to fill in the missing gaps, not for parents who know the answer.

What role does a parent play in their child's Tutorwiz study at home?

Being a parent of a student who has enrolled with Tutorwiz, you play a part in encouraging and supporting your child. Though they are left alone to complete the weekly lesson plans, the children need that little bit of TLC. Make their study space comfortable, have their favourite items around them, a notepad and pencils to hand and perhaps a drink close by.

What if my maths or English is not very good?

That is why Tutorwiz has been developed and designed specifically for Maths and English. Even if a child’s maths and English was perfect, Tutorwiz would still add to the learning process.

Maths Wiz and English Wiz are central to the Tutorwiz tutoring solution. The programs include over 35,000 interactive questions, skill-building games and tests (including assessments for all students in Key Stage 1, 2, 3, 4. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy). Using Maths Wiz and English Wiz, students can learn much faster (in fact teachers and principals have reported, concepts that may take up to 2 weeks to learn in the classroom can be learned in just 20 minutes on the program) due to its interactive nature.

Our tutors undertake extensive training on the programs so that we can confidently provide support to our parents and students. We use the feedback from parents and our interaction with students to constantly improve the programs and develop ways to improve the way we can support our families. When Maths Wiz and English Wiz is combined with support from our tutor team, it truly is a most effective and affordable tutoring solution.

How will my child's progress be recognised?

With all the hard work the student puts in with Tutorwiz but also at school, we have instigated a reward and recognition scheme. Firstly, and foremost, the student will see that they are able, with confidence to answer questions and solve problems set in the classroom far easier than previously. They will be confident in giving their answers even to the extent of not being afraid to put their hand up in class and ask a question. Secondly, we have an incentive programme in place which will allocate points into the students online Tutorwiz Points Bank. The student wins these points when weekly lesson plans are completed, and tests/exams have been answered as correctly as possible. These points add up and as soon as enough points have been accumulated, they can be handed in for High Street vouchers.

Is using Tutorwiz Mathswiz and Englishwiz as effective as 1-2-1 tutoring?

Using Tutorwiz tutorial programmes is just as effective as 1-2-1 tutoring but with the major added benefits of convenience, the flexibility of session times, lower cost, and a safe, relaxed environment for the student.

Our experience has shown that many of the students who have formerly used 1-2-1 tutoring find online tutoring to be at least equally as effective and enjoy the added benefits that come with this form of tutoring.

Are you experienced in working with students with learning disabilities?

Tutorwiz’s programmes Mathswiz and Englishwiz can work with students having learning disabilities such as ADHD and Dyslexia. We encourage parents to enrol their children into Tutorwiz and have fun whilst learning.

The signing up process is very simple. We will send out a form to electronically sign. One this is done; an email will come out for you to open and fill in your bank card or credit card details. You have at least 14 days to use the programmes before the billing starts. IN that time if you think it is not for you, just let us know and we will stop everything.

How will I be billed for monthly and annual subscriptions?

Annual and monthly subscriptions both renew automatically at the end of each subscription period. For monthly users, it will be the same date each month and for annual users, it will be the same date each year.

I have multiple children, is there a discount for multiple subscriptions?

Yes absolutely! The install training fee is also a family fee, so if more children of the same family want to enrol, there won’t be another training fee. The new student can sign on at any time and the fee will be adjusted accordingly. Please enquire about special family discounts.

Can I change my subscription from a monthly to an annual subscription?

Yes, you can. We will just work out the number of months left, total them up and that amount is paid. When the year ends, a yearly renewal will start.

Can I cancel my subscription any time?

You can cancel the subscription in the first 14 days. After that, it is a year’s subscription. We do recommend that once the programme has started, it is best to keep the programme running as it will only benefit the student. Our Parents Terms and Conditions will offer more information.
